With a theme of “Bringing the Country to the Coast” for the annual Port Douglas Reef and Rainforest Carnivale, it was fitting for the Quicksilver crew to come boot scooting into town with their seahorses!
The two week celebration of life in our tropical paradise kicked off on 23 May with the street parade and over 50 Quicky crew dressed to party country-style on the Quicksilver float.
Pictured here are some of the gorgeous crew, (boys and girls!) ready to take to the street parade.
Once again Quicksilver was very pleased to continue our long association with Carnivale, and in particular, sponsorship of the Quicksilver Food, Wine and a Taste of Port for the past 5 years.
Featuring live entertainment, art and culture, cuisine, family and sporting events, Carnivale celebrates the pleasures, weather and lifestyle of our region

Ecotourism and the Marine Biologist
Meet Russell Hore, head of Quicksilver’s Reef Biosearch - 19 years of diving into his work and still as passionate as ever!
G’day – My name is Russell Hore, and I’m a marine biologist. I’ve been working with Quicksilver Connections in the Reef Biosearch department for nearly 19 years (phew!). When I applied for the position of marine biologist back in the late 80s, I didn’t really have any concept of what I was getting myself into, being a city boy born and bred. ’... Read Full Story |

Rare sighting of Endangered Eagle Ray
Passengers and crew aboard our Port Douglas-based dive and snorkel vessel Silversonic recently enjoyed an amazing experience, when an Ornate Eagle Ray (Aetomylaeus vespertilio) was spotted swimming around “Castle Rock”, one of Quicksilver’s remote dive sites on the Agincourt reefs.
This gentle giant (one of the few species of eagle ray without a stinging barb) measured nearly 3.5m across the wings, and total length approaching 5m. The Ornate Eagle Ray is well named, as the patterns across the dorsal surface are exquisite, consisting of a mosaic of stripes and spots

"Postcard to the Silverswift Crew"
Thank you for such a fabulous day out at the reefs. From the friendly welcome and jokes as we stepped aboard to lunch, coffees and everything else that came with a smile.
We had our own dive gear which has annoyed other operator’s boat crews in the past, not so with the you guys. You kept the divers organised so that all the groups were ready to dive together without any waiting, but more importantly, without making anyone feel rushed – very appreciated. It added to the relaxed enjoyment.
Our dive master was Dai, he lead us about at the perfect pace, showing us some of the most amazing critters and fishies. The best was the near invisible Cleaner Shrimp – a treat indeed!
You will be seeing us again, and finally we have a dive boat to recommend to visitors and friends. Thank you again.
Happy bubbles to you all!
Richard and Sarah, Townsville

How do fish see?
Fish have eyes very similar to a human, but not all have excellent colour vision. Shallow water fish, especially tropical fish, can see a broad spectrum of colours, however deep water fish are usually quite limited. Fish’s eyes are positioned to allow excellent all round viewing, but some have their eyes on top of their heads, as they have a bottom dwelling existence. |
